Political corruption is nothing new, but it does seem to be rising in recent years. And we’re seeing more law enforcement involvement, including numerous probes and investigations.
Now, two Democratic members of the Detroit City Council are on the hot seat. They’re facing some serious accusations and the citizens of the city are demanding answers.
That’s why the FBI just got involved — they’ve executed search warrants to find evidence.
It happened on Wednesday: the FBI raided offices in Detroit City Hall, and also raided the homes of Democrats Janee Ayers and Scott Benson. They also raided the home of Benson’s chief of staff.
This is in regards to possible bribery charges paid to city officials.
And if the FBI finds the evidence they need, both Democrat leaders could be facing stiff punishment. It’s also not the first time we’ve seen politicians in handcuffs in 2021.
FBI special agent Tim Waters made it clear that while no official charges have been filed yet, the investigation will continue.
As for why they conducted the raids, Waters had this to say (via The Blaze):
Why are we doing this? Why are we doing these search warrants? Because the citizens of Detroit have a right to a city government that is free of corruption.
Waters added that any evidence they collect “will be presented to the U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern district of Michigan.” That’s when future decisions will be made.
Detroit has been hit with a rash of political-based arrests recently.
These raids come just a few weeks after Detroit City Councilman Andre Spivey was arraigned on a charge of conspiracy to commit bribery in federal court.
This isn’t good news for Detroit residents, who have been hoping the city would bounce back in recent years. If political corruption continues to be a problem, they won’t make much progress.
Republicans also contend that criminal activity is on the rise among Democrat leaders.
We have seen multiple Democrats taken into custody for protesting in 2021, for example, though of course Democrats contend Republicans are just as dirty.
Regardless, all Americans want elected officials that are actually honest and hard-working — as difficult as that is to get these days.
